Report – Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, Sligo, 2015

Portarlington CCÉ travelled by Car, Bus and Train to Sligo for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

The numbers were large and well up for the occasion but whatever the outcome of the Competitions, everybody was prepared to do their best, try their hardest and above all, have an enjoyable time with tunes and fun.

The competitions were over three days, Fri. Sat. and Sun. Nine different competitors were involved in 23 different competitions from Solo Singing, Comhrá agus Banna Ceili.

Well done to Sligo on a very well organised Fleadh Cheoil. It was smoothly run with great attention to detail.

A word of thanks too for the large number of supporters and well-wishers who travelled in support of everyone competing. It was wonderful to see so many familiar and happy local people at the Fleadh. You did yourselves proud and were suitably loud and vocal at the Band Competitions. It was a case of ‘just do it’ when vocal support was needed. Maith Sibh.

Congratulations also to the medal winners from the other Branches in Co Laois.

Aaron Mackessy, Conall O Cnaimhin, Naoise Kettle, Cliona Dowling Mc Donald,

The Ballyroan Half Set, Daniel Delaney.

The Branch was also delighted to have its Chairman, Robert Gleeson selected for and awarded the ‘Bardic Award’ by the Árd Comhairle of Comhaltas at a function in the Clarion Hotel on the Tuesday night of the Fleadh. In accepting the award, the Chairman thanked his family, particularly his wife Frances for their support and patience. He also thanked the very many members of the Branch who through their work and dedication to the aims of Comhaltas over a long number of years have made Portarlington CCÉ as strong it is today. He also thanked the Árd Comhairle for the citation and plaque.
